The anime anthology series Star Wars Visions also featured two stories taking place after The Rise of Skywalker with “The Twins” and “The Ninth Jedi,” but Visions was not canon either. Much of the LEGO Holiday Special and LEGO Terrifying Tales both take place after The Rise of Skywalker, as will the soon to be released LEGO Summer Vacation, but none of these stories are canon. This is not the first Star Wars story to take place after The Rise of Skywalker that has come out since the movie’s release in 2019, but it is the first canon story to take place after the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga. It takes place during the celebration after the Battle of Exegol in The Rise of Skywalker, after what was seen of the celebration in the movie. The last of the four stories in the comic is called “A Eulogy for Snap” and shows Poe Dameron and the other surviving members of Black Squadron mourning the death of Temmin “Snap” Wexley. "Will you be up long?" she asked, her voice thick with the beginnings of slumber. He had no idea what he'd done to her- what he'd done for her- and he probably never would. He was the man who'd made her believe in herself. Even when he'd married, and she'd sat in the pews at his wedding, and watching him meant watching him watch his bride with all the love and devotion that burned in her own heart. She hated that she was still so desperate for a glimpse of him, but it had been this way for years. "How long do you think Turner will remain here in the country?" Miranda asked, trying not to bite her tongue. Her maid had left her nightclothes atop the covers, and Miranda respectfully turned her head while Olivia changed into them. "I'm exhausted," Olivia declared, sliding off the bed. Her candle was shedding flickers of light on the blotter, and she suddenly felt tired. Miranda looked back down at the writing desk. Light from Uncommon Stars combines a trifecta of seemingly disparate genres into one of the most wholesome, magical tales ever told. ( And a national bestseller, a Hugo Award finalist, a Barnes & Noble Best Science Fiction Book of 2021, and… I could go on, but my point is that the whole world adores this book, including Rick Riordan, the author of the much-beloved Percy Jackson series.) They had left it on my desk (mystery solved!) because it was, in fact, the UConn Reads selection for the 2022-2023 academic year. However, my wonderful faculty mentors at the Humanities Institute later informed me that Light from Uncommon Stars was no ordinary novel. Until the following week, I went about my life just assuming it was a cute little anonymous gift from the universe. But letting herself fall in love with him risks the best job she’s ever had. Pretty pompous, eh? Picture books spare no one, and my learning curve was steep! Tell us about your road to publication, what did that involve for you?īecause I had been writing daily for many years, I hoped my trajectory would be shorter than others who had less experience in writing. I read up on how the heck people got published, and later that fall, in 2015, I found SCBWI and my first critique partners. But I couldn’t stop scratching the itch to write. The day my youngest son went to preschool, I snuggled up with my Cavalier King Charles puppy in a cozy armchair and drafted the picture book of my heart, which spilled out way too long, descriptive, and didactic. I wanted to try writing one, especially for my oldest, who was born with microtia/atresia-a malformed ear and no ear canal. The irreverent, funny new picture books we found surprised and delighted me. In those early years caring for my sons, we read together constantly. I had left my job as a newspaper reporter and editor a few years earlier to be a stay-at-home mom. I knew the day my youngest went to preschool and I finally had a few hours to myself. When did you know you wanted to write picture books? My whole family lives here now, so my kids are blessed with abundant grandparent and cousin time. I live in rural Kansas, just three miles from the wheat, corn, and soybean farm where I grew up. In turn, it begs other questions: Are we happy? Are we healthy? Are we better or worse off for having to endure it?Īt the novella’s outset, the immortal gods Hermes and Apollo are fresh off a debaucherous outing at a Toronto tavern when Hermes wonders if animals would be better or worse off with human consciousness (a somewhat nebulous concept, but you get the idea). This question–asked by Atticus, an enlightened Neapolitan mastiff–is the thematic center of Andre Alexis’ wonderful new novella, Fifteen Dogs. Published in 2015 by Coach House Books | Papreback: 171 pages | Goodreads Rating: 4.06 based upon 312 ratings At times philosophical, at other times horrific, Fifteen Dogs is writer Andre Alexis proving that you can, indeed, teach an old form new tricks. The final of five 2015 Giller shortlist reviews, Fifteen Dogs is an examination of the gift/curse that is human consciousness. I plan to read everything this author writes, and I look forward to his next book, where I hope we'll not only see more of Jack, but more of the mysterious Angela, as well. This amazing story is well-researched, thrilling, and intriguing to the very end. The plot twists and turns and the reader wonders who to believe, who to trust, and what to do next, right along with Jack. Little does he know it's rigged with explosives. Now he's on the run with half a million dollars vacuum-packed into a bundle the size of a briefcase. But their heist goes horribly wrong, and only one of them makes it out alive. Jack finds himself caught between his scary employer and the even scarier Wolf, a criminal mastermind who owns Atlantic City. In a daring operation, two crooks-for-hire rob an Atlantic City casino. The story begins with a botched casino robbery and the hunt for the missing stolen money, which must be recovered quickly before the evil employer who hires Jack Delton, one of many aliases the Ghostman uses, is destroyed. The hero of Ghostman is a compelling character, and I found myself on his side, rooting for him, despite his off-the-grid criminal lifestyle. The main character may be a bad guy, but author Roger Hobbs gives him a clear voice and a code of standards. |
